awww le sigh cosplay dramu rant
Apparently since I spammed photos of that cosplayer I admired my friends had decided it was not to their taste cause it looked “fake”. Well to each their own opinions as some try to achieve the doll/anime-like look in their photos and some try to look more natural. But that promted me to remember bad times in my life as a cosplayer, when the guys in my life *cough*exes*cough* were against me cosplaying and really disliked it.
Reactions ranged from ‘i dont really want other people taking photos of you’, ‘you shouldn’t cosplay that character coz she’s not sexy’ to more blatant ‘you look ugly in costume / you look ugly with make-up’ or to even more puzzling ‘you’re fat’ (said to 115lbs me three years ago). And this was said by my exes and not just random ppl </3
There’s also the stereotype that if you put on make-up/are into clothes fashion etc = slutty or fake because you’re trying to alter how you look. I really like make-up (despite how amateur I am at it) because its like an art form, and I appreciate how simply lining your eyebrows differently can make you look entirely different.
People’s expectations and standards are extreme to the point that there are fans dissing cosplayers because cosers use eyelid glue. o.O I mean srsly how else do you think asians mostly born with monolids get double lids. Some ppl have taken some things as a sign of you being a ‘fake’ person.
Anyway tl;dr if you have a person dear to you that understands why you cosplay and supports you even if he doesn’t dabble in the hobby, you got yourself a good man/woman.
okay i hide in corner now
